MEET KERA
About Kera Blades - Snell
I am a first-generation college graduate, immigrant from Belize, entrepreneur, and community leader who believes in expanding opportunity through education, service, and accountable leadership.
I was raised by a single mother who taught me the values of resilience, hard work, and giving back. I later became a single mother myself, raising two sons while working full-time, building businesses as an entrepreneur, and earning my master’s degree. Those experiences shaped my belief that opportunity should never depend on where someone starts in life.
Nine years ago, I made Santa Monica my home. Since then, I’ve dedicated my life to giving back to this community through leadership and action. I serve on several local boards, am a proud member of the Santa Monica Rotary Club, A member of Rotary International since age 19yrs, President of SMC Associates for the past two years, and Executive Director of the Santa Monica Black Empowerment Association, where we provide resources, assistance, and case-management services to individuals across Los Angeles County.
Through the Santa Monica Black Empowerment Association, I founded the Empower Her Entrepreneurial Program, a ten-week business development course designed to help women build sustainable businesses and economic stability. I wrote the program curriculum and textbook and personally teach the course. In 2025, I proudly graduated 18 women from the program; each completing a structured pathway toward entrepreneurship and workforce readiness.
My husband, Barry Snell, shares my commitment to public service. Together we have five children and recently welcomed our first grandson and granddaughter—deepening my belief in building strong institutions for the next generation.
I come from generations of strong women devoted to service—my grandmother raised ten children, my mother is one of nine sisters, and each instilled in me the responsibility to lead with integrity, compassion, and action. I am a proud product of my Mother and my Aunts!
As a Trustee, I will bring experienced leadership, fiscal responsibility, and a deep respect for the role Santa Monica College plays in shaping our community’s future.
MY PRIORITIES
Student Success
Every student deserves the support they need to succeed. I will advocate for strong academic resources, including counseling, tutoring, and clear pathways to completion, whether students are pursuing transfer, career training, or lifelong learning.
Workforce + Transfer Readiness
Santa Monica College must stay aligned with today’s economy. I support strengthening partnerships with four-year universities, unions, and local employers so students graduate with relevant skills and clear next steps.
Trustee Governance
Effective trusteeship requires ethical leadership, transparency, and accountability. I will prioritize listening to students, faculty, and the community while setting measurable goals and maintaining high standards of governance.
Safe, Supportive Campuses
Students learn best when they feel safe, respected, and supported. I support campus environments that promote well-being, mental health, and a sense of belonging for all students.
Fiscal Responsibility
Public trust depends on responsible stewardship of resources. I will work to ensure budgets are transparent, funds are used efficiently, and long-term planning protects Santa Monica College’s future.
